Gnr(Gunner) Roy Andrew Joseph Kitts

Roy Andrew Joseph Kitts was born on May 8, 1923 in Deux Rivieres, Ontario and was the oldest of five children.  At the age of nine, his mother passed away so he was placed in an orphanage.  Growing up he worked on a farm and was only 18 years old when he enlisted.
Roy enlisted into the 2nd Anti - Tank Regiment on March 17, 1942 at the age of 18.  His rank was Gunner and his serial # was B - 17447.  He fought in Italy, Germany, and England from 1942 to 1945.  On October 11, 1944, Roy was shot in the abdomen, in Ortona, Italy.  He was hospitalized for four months and was finally shipped home on February 22, 1945.  Two of his brothers also enlisted in the war.
When Roy returned home he worked at a logging camp in Regan, Ontario where he met his soon to be wife, Gloria Nolan.  They settled down in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario and had two children Sandra and Darlene, which later became five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  But I knew him as “Uncle Roy.”  He was my grandfather’s brother and although I have very few memories of him I always felt a connection with him.  He passed away on July 7, 2004, at the age of 81.
