Private Kenneth Mackay was born on January 11th,
1922. At just 19 years old he decided he would join the army. Ken drove all
types of vehicles location to location for 3 years altogether. He drove every
type of vehicle except for tanks. Ken boarded the ship in Halifax along with
the soldiers from the “Prince Edward Light Horse” and embarked on a 14 day sail
to England. He trained in England for 2 years before setting out on another
sail to Italy which ended up taking 21 days.
When they were sailing down to Gibraltor, Italy they
were attacked by enemy planes which sunk the ship sailing next to them filled
with nurses and soldiers. Ken and his regiment helped save several lives that
day.
When Ken signed up for the army he had no clue his
other brothers Donald, Wendyll and Leigh signed up as well. Ken’s younger
brother Leigh was just 15 when he joined, as he lied about his age. Leigh was
part of the 11th Army Field Regiment. All 4 brothers traveled over
to England on the same convoy and that’s where they found out they would all be
fighting together. Kenneth, Donald, and Wendyll would make it through the war.
Leigh died at the young age of 17 and is buried in Agira, Italy.
When Ken was discarched in 1946 him and his regiment
marched to South Africa and sailed back home.
When Ken and his buddy from his regiment were
receiving mail one day his friend shared his letter with Kenn. It was from his
sister who had attached a photo of herself. Kenn saw the picture and told his
friend “If I make it back from the war I am going to marry that girl”, and he
did just that. Ken married Audrey MacDougall and had 2 children with her. After
the war Ken operated a store in Stanley Bridge for 31 years.
