Corporal Sidney Bell Enman

Sidney was born in Enmore, PE on November 30th, 1913. He married Doris Roberta Ellis on November 14th, 1934 and he enlisted in the army in September of 1941. At twenty-eight years old, he was significantly older than most other men enlisting at the time.

His military training began at the Charlottetown Armories in Charlottetown, PE. Afterwards he was posted to CFB Borden in Barrie, ON. He served in the Armored Corps division of the Fort Garry Horse Regiment, trained as a Morse code operator for work in tanks.

After his training, he sailed to London, England from Yarmouth, NS. It was not too long after his arrival that he severely broke his ankle. He underwent many surgeries in his recovery process, some involving the insertion of pins into the ankle. He never saw active duty in the war because of this injury. On his leave he enjoyed travelling to Dundee, Scotland.

After the War, Sidney became an active member of the Victoria West United Church and the Ellerslie Legion Branch 22 where he was a past president. His hobbies included gardening, bird-watching, digging clams and quahogs and walking on the beach. He died on July 19th, 2002.
